Welcome to the African Centre for Rural Development & Environment (ACERDEN)

The African continent is facing a series of technological, human, social, economic and environmental challenges, which if not resolved, will disrupt the basic life support systems, contribute to the degeneration of institutional structures and perpetuate underdevelopment.

Nigeria, like other developing countries, is faced with the problem of food insecurity, widespread poverty, illiteracy, human misery and environmental degradation among the urban and rural dwellers. Access to education, health and safe drinking water are grossly inadequate in the urban cities and are almost non-existent in many rural areas of Nigeria.

Sustainable development is "development that meet the needs of the present generation without jeopardizing the ability of future generation to meet their own needs". The need for the economic, social and political emancipation of the Nigerian population as well as the promotion.

About the Founder

Prof.  Daniel Sunday Ugwu

Prof. Daniel Sunday Ugwu is a Professor/Reader in the Department of Agricultural Economics & Extension, Enugu State University of Science & Technology (ESUT).

He is an Agricultural Economist by profession as well as a Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) Specialist.

Prof. Ugwu was the Ag. Programme Manager (1999 - 2000) and Director Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation (PME) (1991 - 2002) of a World Bank-Assisted Project, the Enugu State Agricultural Development Programme.

He also served as the President of a Civil Society Organisation, the Enugu State Coalition of Civil Societies on HIV/AIDS (ESCCHA) (2003-2009).
